The carp lake - available for exclusive hire for up to 5 people

The carp lake is only available for fishing holidays on an exclusive lake hire basis, so you will have the place to yourself while carp fishing in France. Aside from the obvious benefit of not having to worry about your gear being pilfered by passing anglers, this also means that you can be sure of getting the swim you want when you want it, which makes for a more relaxing carp fishing holiday in France.

The carp lake was restocked in 2008 with more than half a ton of big carp in readiness for the start of the 2009 carp fishing holiday season. Although this included a handful of high doubles, the vast majority were twenties, thirties and forties. As anyone who goes carp fishing in France will know these carp will grow rapidly in the coming years, particularly here in the warm, sunny climate of South West France.

The lake has five generously sized pegs that can comfortably accommodate at least one two-man bivvy. Each peg also has a large wooden fishing platform where you can set up your rods. There are also several other swims which can be fished directly from the bank side, although bivvying up at these could be a little cramped. They do however provide additional options for those anglers who like to spend their carp fishing holidays in France stalking big carp or who simply want to change pegs during the day.

Big carp - some over 40lb

As well as big carp over 40lb and catfish to 60lb, the lake also contains a variety of mixed coarse fish, such as black bass, perch, roach and sun fish. And if you walk quietly past the trees on the dammed bank during the summer you may spot the sun-bathing terrapins before they plop back into the water to await your departure. The carp lake is also visited by a wide assortment of other creatures, including wild boar, stags, roe deer, buzzards, falcons, owls, woodpeckers, swallows and kingfishers - though not usually all at once!

A natural-looking lake

The carp lake is triangular, around three acres in size and was formed in 1979 by allowing rainwater to fill a damned valley. The bottom is mostly clay with some silt around the wooded marginal areas. As the carp lake is rain fed, the depth varies by as much as a metre depending on the time of year you come fishing in France with the lowest water levels in late autumn and the highest in spring. The lake bottom follows the natural contours of the valley shelving gradually upwards from the deepest point at the centre of the damn, where the depth is around four metres, towards the sloping margins on the lake's other two sides.

The main body of water is snag free, although as with most natural waters, the margins offer some refuge for bolting fish with clumps of bulrushes, marsh grass and over-hanging trees. There are also patches of elodea out in the middle of the lake. This is not some sterile, recently-dug carp fishing holiday venue the likes of which you often find when carp fishing in France. It's a natural, mature carp lake with plenty of interesting features.
