Carp fishing in France - Beginner's luck & endless runs!
Peter Knie caught 27 fish during the week, including eleven 20lb+ carp. It would have been more, but he was catching so many during the day he allowed himself the luxury of sleeping at night.
Peter Knie, Kevin Butler and fishing novice Tony Briggs were the third set of anglers to spend their fishing holiday at Forest Lake Carp Fishing. They caught 58 carp between them (11 singles, 27 doubles, 18 twenties and 2 thirties) using semi-fixed inline bolt rigs with four- or five-inch hooklinks and simple hair rigs. Good quality, single, bottom baits accounted for all the better fish (fishmeal and sweet baits being equally popular). These were fished over 40 to 50 free offerings. Double baits and pop-ups failed miserably, while sweetcorn only attracted small wildies.
Lucky Tony Briggs landed his first ever carp 24 hours after arriving at the fishing lake - and what a first carp it was at 35lb 12oz.
All this masterful methodology was lost on one member of the party, though. Tony Briggs hadn't fished since he was "a little lad" and had never caught a carp in his life, but his two mates looked after him well and within 24 hours he had hooked, played and landed his first carp - all 35lb 12oz of it. Talk about beginner's luck! Of course, we did have to point out to him that it could be quite some time before he caught another fish of that size, but he wasn't too disappointed with the other nine fish he caught during his introductory week on the banks of our beloved sport.
